The Rod Blagojevich scandal has taken many people by surprise. The fact that a sitting governor could be so blatant in his desire to continue the "Pay to Play" tactics can be surprising on the surface. However, for those who are familiar with the Chicago political machine and its corrupt tactics, this is really no surprise. These actions may also occur in other states but the blatant arrogance of Blagojevich shows that this is commonplace in Illinois and in particular, Chicago.
Equally surprising to some, is the fact that those on the left and some on the right have been so quick to eliminate President-Elect Obama from any possible wrong doing. This is political correctness if I've ever seen it. I am all for giving Obama the benefit of the doubt and I am in no way suggesting that Obama had anything to do with this scandal. Having said that, I am also not willing to quickly eliminate him from the investigation and say that he didn't have any connection to this. I feel that eliminating him so quickly from suspicion, since he has come from that same Chicago political machine, would be irresponsible.
With that in mind, I don't think any of us should be surprised that Obama has escaped criticism since he has been doing this for two years. Throughout his campaign he continually dodged criticism and controversy by playing it cool and ignoring the issue whenever necessary. The old media is all to willing to give him that pass and they will continue to give him that pass for years to come. The old media will not spend two years promoting this candidate and basically serving as his publicist just to bring him down before he has even taken office for something as rediculous (in their mind) as political corruption within the Chicago machine.
I think time will tell and as stated earlier, I will give him the benefit of the doubt but I will not sit by and ignore evidence as it arises just because he acts like "Cool Hand Luke". I would suggest that if the Democratic Party and the Old Media want to gain back any sort of credibility then they should not dismiss these types of issues so easily. Try being unbiased for a change.
